Event season is kicking off and if you’re looking for some stylish, yet easy to recreate looks, hair and makeup artist, Pia Gould (@ piagould.hmua) has you covered. Whether it’s a fun afternoon out with friends or an elegant evening event, Pia shares her tips on how she achieves these hairstyles and what accessories you can add to further impress.
1. Beachy Curls with a Headband
Loose waves are a great spring hairstyle as they are easy to do and can be worn for any occasion. The soft, bouncy curls paired with an elegant headband creates a look that is both sophisticated and fun.
How to style them:
1. Start by applying a heat protectant spray then section your hair into four large sections.
2. Take smaller pieces of hair, one section at a time, and then using a hair curler, wind them around the barrel, away from your face especially for the front pieces.
3. Hold for a few seconds and then release. For that beachy look, alternate the direction of your curls each time.
4. Once all your hair is curled, allow the curls to cool completely.
5. Gently brush through your hair with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to loosen them into soft waves.
6. Spray with a texture spray to lock in the look without making it stiff.
7. Place your headband on your head, just behind your ears. Leave some hair loose in front it to add dimension.
Tip: To make sure your beautiful loose curls to stay bouncy and defined all day, after curling each section, gently pin the curl up against your scalp with a bobby pin while it cools to help better retain the curl.
2. The Playful Ponytail
You can never go wrong with a classic ponytail, especially when you give it a refresh with the addition of a hair ribbon or bow clip. These can be easily matched to any outfit, bringing a touch of coordination to the look. It's also incredibly practical, as it keeps your hair neat and away from your face.
How to create it:
1. Brush your hair thoroughly to remove any tangles. For a sleeker look, you can apply a little bit of smoothing cream.
2. Comb your hair back into ponytail that's comfortable for you.
3. Secure your hair with a hair tie in a similar colour to your hair.
4. Smooth down any flyaways with either more smoothing cream, a hair oil, or gel.
5. To complete the look, either tie a ribbon around the hair tie or attach a bow clip to the hair just above your ponytail.
Tip: Use the beachy waves curling method once your hair is in a ponytail to add more volume to your style.
3. The Elevated Slicked Back Bun
There’s a reason why the slicked back bun is a never-fail, go-to style! The epitome of relaxed elegance, it’s an effortless hairstyle that the keeps hair off your neck and out of you face while also looking put together. The addition of an oversized scrunchie creates interest and can also be a key accessory instead of earrings or a necklace.
How to create it:
1. Start by adding some hair oil or cream from your roots to the tips of your hair. This makes it easier to slick all your hair back without too many flyaways, plus it also adds that the signature shine.
2. If you prefer a part, spilt your hair now then gather all your hair into a mid to low ponytail with a hair tie, smoothing as you go.
3. Once tied, twist the length of your hair tightly, then begin wrapping it around the base of your ponytail to form the bun.
4. Use a hair tie to secure the bun. Don't worry if it's not perfectly neat. Feel free to mess around with it or undo the bun as many times as you want to get it to your desired look.
5. Finally, tie your scrunchie around the bun. You can move this around too until you’re happy with how it’s sitting.
Tip: To make the scrunchie stand out, opt for an oversized one in a bold print, or pastel shade, or even a satin fabric that matches your outfit.
