8 Awesome Adventures and Activities for the School Holidays
School’s out and fun’s in! But these school holidays, who says little kids should have all the fun?
Say goodbye couch potatoes, adios to ‘I’m bored’ and ‘so long’ to house hermits - it’s time to switch up your holiday routine!
Instead, use this time to bond together as a family, exploring new and fun activities that little and big kids (the adults!) will enjoy. To help get you started, we’ve created a list of our top eight family-friendly activities to get the imagination going.
Engineer an amazing creation
You don’t need fancy equipment for a day of fun. Simply use the items around your home to construct creations inspired by your imagination!
Grab blankets and pillows for the ultimate fort-turned-castle, stack building blocks to create houses, mansions or even a village, or decorate old cardboard boxes to form a rocket ship. Will you be a princess, an astronaut or racing car driver? The opportunities are endless!
Cook up a cupcake character
Tie up your apron and put on your chef’s hat – it’s time to get cooking! Stock your pantry with all the essentials to mix up a delicious batch of cookies or cupcakes together. You can even create your own cookie or cupcake characters by decorating them with sprinkles, lollies, fruit or choc-chips to make smiling faces that will be gobbled up later.
Will you create a person with big chocolate eyes, a rabbit with strawberry ears, or a unicorn with a pretzel nose? Just remember – there’s nothing wrong with a sneaky taste of the dough before it leaves the bowl!
Host a family game night
Move over Grant Denyer, there’s a new game show host in town – you! Collect all of your favourite childhood board games, along with a few newbies, for a night of competitive fun. Solve a murder mystery with Cluedo, try your luck with Kerplunk or guess each person’s new identity with the classic Guess Who.
To find the ultimate champion, you can play a new game each night with a running tally on the fridge to help crown the winner when school returns.
Plan a pamper party
Create a DIY salon at home for a day of pampering for the whole family. Create your own face masks using simple ingredients such as honey, banana and oats, complete with cool cucumber slices for some movie style relaxation fun. Follow with a blow dry or hair curling session or whip out mum’s favourite lipsticks and colourful nail polish to leave everyone feeling like a beauty queen or king!
Build a backyard obstacle course
Turn up the fun by transforming your backyard into an obstacle course that would challenge future Ninja Warrior champions. Scatter pillows, chairs, planks of wood or upside-down pot plants and make it a challenge to move around without falling into the dreaded lava on the ground. A prize awaits for those who make it through!
Turn the page to a new adventure
Jump into the pages of new and exciting books that will spark the whole family’s imagination with an afternoon of quiet book reading. Sail across seas, travel to the moon or learn more about animals. Grab a coffee (or babychino!) and your favourite slippers and you’re all set to settle in on the couch, side by side.
Create a scavenger hunt
Keep little and big minds active with a scavenger hunt filled with puzzles, riddles and clues. The perfect bonding session, get family members working together to find hidden gems around the home.
Consider hiding items under pillows, under couches and in funny places that you wouldn’t typically find them. Is teddy cheekily hiding a chocolate? Is a toy hiding in a toilet paper roll?
Shoot some hoops
Grab a ball and get the heart pumping with some physical activity in the form of a friendly basketball game! Who will be the first to dunk the ball or make five shots in a row? Make a day of it and head to your local basketball court, complete with snacks, for an afternoon together.
